Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs)
The biologically active components in pharmaceuticals, crucial in OrthoTreat’s dual-drug therapy for bone healing.
Antagonistic Effect
A phenomenon where one substance inhibits or counteracts the effect of another, important in drug interactions.
β-caryophyllene [BCP]
A compound acting as a selective CB2 receptor agonist, promoting bone mineralization and inhibiting processes like adipogenesis and osteoclastogenesis.
Blood Flow Enhancement
The improvement of blood circulation, which is vital for nutrient delivery and waste removal in bone tissue, often enhanced by treatments like statins.
Blood Vessels
Tubular structures that carry blood throughout the body, including bones, essential for supplying oxygen and nutrients necessary for bone health and repair.
Bone Fractures
Breaks or cracks in bones, which are a primary focus of OrthoTreat’s regenerative therapies.
Bone Health
The overall condition of bones, influenced by various factors including cellular activity and treatments like statins that affect bone turnover and regeneration.
Bone Metabolism
Refers to the processes involved in maintaining bone tissue balance, including formation and resorption phases critical in bone regeneration.
Bone Remodeling Phases
- Inflammatory Phase: Initial response to fracture involving blood clot formation and inflammatory mediators that prepare the site for healing.
- Reparative Phase: Characterized by callus formation and new bone development around the fracture site.
- Remodeling Phase: The final stage where the bone structure is refined to restore normal shape and function.
Dual-Drug Therapy
A treatment approach using two active pharmaceutical ingredients to enhance therapeutic outcomes, particularly in bone healing applications.
Lovastatin (LOV)
A lipid-lowering medication from the statin class that positively affects bone healing and regeneration. It works by controlling the expression of important proteins and biochemical pathways involved in osteogenesis. Lovastatin has been shown to stimulate osteogenic differentiation and inhibit adipogenic differentiation, contributing to increased bone formation.
ModulX®
OrthoTreat’s proprietary dual-drug therapy formulation designed to accelerate bone healing through controlled release mechanisms across all phases of fracture healing.
Osteoblasts
Cells responsible for new bone formation. They synthesize bone matrix and are essential for the growth and maintenance of bones.
Osteoclasts
Cells that break down bone tissue, playing a crucial role in bone remodeling and calcium homeostasis by resorbing bone matrix.
Osteointegration (Osseointegration)
The process of creating a direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of an implant. This is critical for implant stability, achieved through a series of cellular and molecular events that lead to new bone formation around the implant.
Osteoporosis
A condition characterized by weakened bones due to decreased bone mass and density, leading to an increased risk of fractures. It involves an imbalance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts activity.
Osteoregulation
A new term coined by OrthoTreat referring to the regulation of bone growth, remodeling, and repair processes. This involves a balance between osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) and osteoclasts (bone-resorbing cells).
RANK/RANKL Pathway
RANK (Receptor Activator of Nuclear Factor κB) is a receptor on osteoclasts that binds to RANKL (RANK Ligand), a protein essential for osteoclast differentiation and activation. This pathway is crucial for regulating bone remodeling and is a target for osteoporosis treatments.
Synergistic Effect
When two or more substances or actions produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. In the context of OrthoTreat’s therapies, synergistic effects are sought to enhance bone healing outcomes.
